BERKLEE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Academic Work: Fall 2012
Critic: Jonathan Levi
Program/Site: Vertical Campus / Boston, MA
The predominant skyscraper typology has been one of stacked individual privacies. While the elevator has been the emancipator of horizontal planes above the ground, it has also been the facilitator of tall buildings in which levels are so separated that it hardly matters that they are even part of the same building. Such a model is unsuitable for the Berklee School of Music. In fact, the diversity and interconnectedness of programming contained within the vertical campus brief provides an opportunity to move the existing mixed-use tower typology forward. In the typical model, stacked floorplates connected by a vertical core result in a fracturing of experience as one moves through the space of building. Here, the building itself has fractured and elevator has been spatially liberated, creating a connectedness along oblique axes across levels that cascades through the building. The result is an architectural device for community building that promotes awareness amongst the various contributors to the life of the School.
